Mask Making

1.  Explain three inspirational pieces.
I wanted to use the theme of an animal mask in my mask making.  These three mask were great examples of animal mask.  I wanted my mask to be a cross between a human and an animal.

MASK 1
                                                    MASK 2

                                                                                   MASK 3

2.  Art Criticism

Mask 1: Artist: Singed " Nivea Semprini and the word "Arara"
Title of work:  Brazilian Parrot Mask
             Media:  Rigid paper mesh
             Date:  Unknown
             Size:  6 inches
             Source:  http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Brazil%20Mask%20Parrot.htm

Describe:  This is a mask of the face of a parrot.  The feathers around the birds head are orange, blue and green  The face is white and the the beak is black.  The are holes where the eyes should be.  From the side profile you can see that the mask has a very pronounced beak.
Analysis:  Color is the element that is emphasized in the art work.  The artist uses bright colors to bring out the feathers.  I also see the element of form.  It is important to understand that shape of the mask in order to know what animal it is.  Texture is another element.  In the feathers the artist created texture by painting them in a realistic way.  A principle that I notice is proportion.  The size of the feathers and beak are in proportion with the size of the head.

Mask 2:  Artist:  Unknown, by the Quechua people
              Title of Work:  Bird mask
              Media:  Painted wood
              Date:  Unknown
              Size:  8.7 inches
              Source:  http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Ecuadorian%20Bird%20mask.htm

Describe:  This is another mask of a bird.  This bird looks more like a hawk. The artist responsible for the creation of this mask chose to keep the natural color of the wood.  He used bright colors and bold lines to emphasis the eyes and beak.
Analysis:  The elements that the artist used in this mask are lines, shape, and color.  The artist uses lines in two ways.  The first ways is by making bold curvy lines for the eye, the second way is with the line going down the middle of the head.  The element of shape is present in the diamond shaped eyes and the triangular beak.  Another element I found was form.  This is represented the same ways and in the first one.  A principle that is present is emphasis.  The eyes and beak are dramatically large, forcing the viewer to focus on them.

Mask 3:  Artist:  Unknown
              Title:  Gorilla Mask
              Media:  Papier mache
              Date:  Unknown
              Size:  9 inches
              Source:  http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Ecuadorian%20Gorilla%20Mask.htm

Describe:  This is a mask of a gorillas face.  It is painted in an unrealistic way.  The face is very animated.  The gorilla has long eye lashes and has a big smile on its face.  The expression on its face is almost human-like.
Analysis:  The elements that I notice are color, space and form.  The artist uses the color brown to make the gorilla look like a gorilla.  The element of space is used to separating the face from the head.  and the element of form is used just as it was in mask 1 and 2.  The principle that I notice is unity.  The artist makes all the element to make the art flow well and there a sense of completeness.

3.  My mask:  Angry Pig
                                                                               Sketches

Final Mask!

4.  I used both the element and principle in creating my mask.  I use the element of color to express the realistic color of a pig.  I used about 3 different shades of pink.  I also used lines and shapes.  I used lines to express the mood of the mask in the eyebrows and mouth.  I wanted the pig to appear angry.   I used shape in the nose and eyes.   I used the principle of unity to express a sense of completeness in my mask.

5.  I thought this was a fun project.  I think it gave us a lot of room to be creative and do a lot of different things.  I am pleased with my finished project.  The three mask inspired my picture and I tried to incorporate different things from each mask.
