Mod 12...Video posting

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I selected each of this videos because the titles interested me.

2.   For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The key concepts I learned from watching Abstract Expressionism and Pop was that in the 50s and 60s artist started viewing art differently.  People were not use to seeing art this way and it was not welcomed as pop art was.

The key concepts I learned from watching Hockney on Photography was that David Hockney was not only a talented painter but also very gifted in photography.  This film take you through a journey on how he was able to transform his skill into being a photographer.

3. How did the videos relate to the readings.

The video Abstract Expressionism and Pop relates to the reading because both topics are discussed in the text. the book defines expressionism as and art movement to the 20th century, which claimed the right to distort visual appearances to express psychological or emotion states.  This is exactly what the film showed and gave man examples of.

The video Hockney on Photography relates to the reading because there is an entire chapter dedicated to photography in the text.  This film shows one mans journey and the text explains how how photography is a work of art.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

i thought both of the films were educationally interesting.  Its nice to have a understanding of the history of art and where it came from.  These films gave me a deeper understanding a different area of art. The add depth to the readings because the give a more detailed explanation of the topic.

STEP 1
1. What is the title of the exhibit?

I'm not sure what the title of this exhibit was?  I couldn't find where the title was located but I didn't want that to discourage me from using this exhibit because I found it very interesting.

2. What is the theme of the exhibition?

The them that I think this exhibit was about was nudity and nature.  These are the two things that I found flowing consistently throughout the exhibit

STEP 2
1. What type of lighting is used?

The lighting that is being used is the florescent lighting that is used mainly in the art gallery.

 2. What colors are used on the walls?

The wall are painted white.  I think this helps draw the viewers attention to the paintings.

3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space?

The aren't any materials used in the interior of this space.  I think the main thing that ties this space together and what makes this feel like an exhibit is the frames that are used to display the paintings.

4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?

The movement of this gallery is a bit steal.   The walls are plain and its very boxy.  They have great art pieces.  To some people this flow might work, but for me it was kind of dull.

1. How are the artworks organized?

I think that this artworks are organized based on which ones are nude and which ones focus on nature.  I noticed that all the ones of nude females were off to the left and more towards the back, while the paints of nature where more towards the front.  The frames are what tied everything together.

2. How are the artworks similar?

This artworks are similar because they all have something to do with the beauty of nature, be it the natural figure of a women's body or a the beauty of the natural environment.

3. How are the artworks different?

The artworks differ because they are all done by different artist all searching of different out comes.

4. How are the artworks framed?

This is the most interesting part of this exhibit.  The artworks are all framed in beautiful gold frames.  They stand out and help all the pieces tie together.

5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?

The artworks are identified with labels, off to the side of the painting, stating the titles, dates, artist, ect.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?

The artworks are in a line approximately 2 feet apart.

1. The title of this painting is La Toilette.  Artist is Pablo Picasso and he made this in 1906.  The media of this painting is oil on canvas.  There are two women in this painting.  One of them are clothed while the other one is completely nude.  The one that is clothed seems to be holding a mirror and the women that is nude is looking at her reflection.  She is also messing with her hair.  The elements that I notice in this paintings are color, shape, and line.  Color is used in a natural way.  The natural color bring a since of overall calmness to the painting.  The blue dress of the clothed women stands out.  Shape is use in the figures of the two women and the simple objects of the background.  I find line being use in the women, they stand long and thin and take up the majority of the length of the portrait.  A principle that is use is  movement.  The artist has arranged the figures in a way so the viewer knows the story line.  This painting doesn't remind me of anything.  I think the artist is tying to show the beauty of the human female body.

2.

The title of this painting is Peasants in the Field.  The artist is Camile Pissarro, he made this in 1890.  The media is oil on a canvas.  This is a painting of workers in a filed done farm work.  There is a man and a women and it seems like a hot sunny day.  The element that stands out the most is color.  The artist has used color to express a certain emotion.  The artist has used many different colors throughout the color while.  This allows the picture to have a bright and vivid effect.  The principle that is noticeable is emphasis.  The artist wants the viewers to focus on the two works in the foreground of the painting.  I have never worked on a farm so this painting doesn't remind me of anything I have experienced in my life.  It does however look similar to other painting I have seen of plantations.  I think the artist is trying to show the importance of hard labor.
3.

The last painting I selected was the painting on the left of the picture above.  This is Le Bassin du Jas de Bouffan.  The artist is Paul Cezanne and he made this in 1878.  The media of this artwork is oil on a canvas.
Again the main element that this artist focused on was color.  This is a painting of a tree in front of what seems to be a source of water. The artist used many different shades of green to express the feel of nature and the liveliness of the trees.  Pattern and repetition are used in this painting to give life to the leaves. Also movement is used in the leaves.  They appear to be swaying in the wind.  This artwork reminds me of a cool summer day.  Its very comfortable and gives me a relaxed feeling when I view it.  I think the artist is trying to say, enjoy nature.  Don;t let the beautifulness of life pass you bye.

4.  I think this was a great visit.  I made me look at the art gallery in a different way. I didn't look at the artworks as individuals, I looked at them as a group.  This was a great way to see what links artworks together and what makes them different.

Mod 11... Video Posto

1.  I choose A Sunday on La Grande Jatte and Expressionism.  I selected A Sunday on La Grande Jatte because this painting is very famous and has always caught my attention.  I wanted to know more about the this painting and the unanswered questions in it.  I selected Expressionism because I was interested in the topic and wanted to know more.

2. The key concepts of A Sunday on La Grande Jatte video was to give a bit of history about the artist.  Also to explain some theories of the many different interpretations of this masterpiece.  The key concept of Expressionism was to show how different artist showed expressionism in their artworks.  It also give some history on these artist to give the viewers an idea of their background and why the viewed the world the why they did.

3.  A Sunday on La Grande Jatte related to the readings because this portrait was discussed in the text.  The video allowed a deeper understand of the painting and the artist.  The video Expressionism related the readings because this was a topic in the text book.  They are many examples of expressionism throughout the text.

4.  I enjoyed both films.  I think it was very educational to get a deeper understand of artists of a different era.  This allowed the viewers to understand why an artist made expressed his artwork a certain way.

Mask Making

1.  Explain three inspirational pieces.
I wanted to use the theme of an animal mask in my mask making.  These three mask were great examples of animal mask.  I wanted my mask to be a cross between a human and an animal.

MASK 1
                                                    MASK 2

                                                                                   MASK 3

2.  Art Criticism

Mask 1: Artist: Singed " Nivea Semprini and the word "Arara"
Title of work:  Brazilian Parrot Mask
             Media:  Rigid paper mesh
             Date:  Unknown
             Size:  6 inches
             Source:  http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Brazil%20Mask%20Parrot.htm

Describe:  This is a mask of the face of a parrot.  The feathers around the birds head are orange, blue and green  The face is white and the the beak is black.  The are holes where the eyes should be.  From the side profile you can see that the mask has a very pronounced beak.
Analysis:  Color is the element that is emphasized in the art work.  The artist uses bright colors to bring out the feathers.  I also see the element of form.  It is important to understand that shape of the mask in order to know what animal it is.  Texture is another element.  In the feathers the artist created texture by painting them in a realistic way.  A principle that I notice is proportion.  The size of the feathers and beak are in proportion with the size of the head.

Mask 2:  Artist:  Unknown, by the Quechua people
              Title of Work:  Bird mask
              Media:  Painted wood
              Date:  Unknown
              Size:  8.7 inches
              Source:  http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Ecuadorian%20Bird%20mask.htm

Describe:  This is another mask of a bird.  This bird looks more like a hawk. The artist responsible for the creation of this mask chose to keep the natural color of the wood.  He used bright colors and bold lines to emphasis the eyes and beak.
Analysis:  The elements that the artist used in this mask are lines, shape, and color.  The artist uses lines in two ways.  The first ways is by making bold curvy lines for the eye, the second way is with the line going down the middle of the head.  The element of shape is present in the diamond shaped eyes and the triangular beak.  Another element I found was form.  This is represented the same ways and in the first one.  A principle that is present is emphasis.  The eyes and beak are dramatically large, forcing the viewer to focus on them.

Mask 3:  Artist:  Unknown
              Title:  Gorilla Mask
              Media:  Papier mache
              Date:  Unknown
              Size:  9 inches
              Source:  http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Ecuadorian%20Gorilla%20Mask.htm

Describe:  This is a mask of a gorillas face.  It is painted in an unrealistic way.  The face is very animated.  The gorilla has long eye lashes and has a big smile on its face.  The expression on its face is almost human-like.
Analysis:  The elements that I notice are color, space and form.  The artist uses the color brown to make the gorilla look like a gorilla.  The element of space is used to separating the face from the head.  and the element of form is used just as it was in mask 1 and 2.  The principle that I notice is unity.  The artist makes all the element to make the art flow well and there a sense of completeness.

3.  My mask:  Angry Pig
                                                                               Sketches

Final Mask!

4.  I used both the element and principle in creating my mask.  I use the element of color to express the realistic color of a pig.  I used about 3 different shades of pink.  I also used lines and shapes.  I used lines to express the mood of the mask in the eyebrows and mouth.  I wanted the pig to appear angry.   I used shape in the nose and eyes.   I used the principle of unity to express a sense of completeness in my mask.

5.  I thought this was a fun project.  I think it gave us a lot of room to be creative and do a lot of different things.  I am pleased with my finished project.  The three mask inspired my picture and I tried to incorporate different things from each mask.
