Video Review.. Mod 10

1.  I selected these to videos because the titles seemed interesting to me.  If I had enough free time to watch more of them I would because I like to learn about different cultures and I think it;s interesting learning about their art.  The videos I choose were; Islamic Art: India and the Middle East and African Art.

2.  The key concepts that I learned from Islamic Art were about the wonders of Islamic art.  It focuses on Islamic architecture and other forms of at that are from the Islamic world.  In order to understand the art of the Islamic and Middle East we need to know the culture and history.  On of the architectures that the video reviews is the Taj Mahal.  The key concepts that I learned from the African Art video was that art is very important in Africa.  It is apart of their daily life.  The video explains the importance of art in African rituals.

3.  The videos relate to the readings of the text because each form of art is also mentioned in the text.  The Taj Mahal was an architecture mentioned in the book on page 293.  African art and Islamic art were both mentioned in chapter 18.  Both the book and videos gave great examples of their art pieces and history of the regions

4.  Each film was interesting and help me to have a better understanding of art of the Islamic and African areas.  Reading about them in the text book is helpful but watching the videos about them help me to get a better understand and more facts about the topics.

Module 9... Video Review

1.  I picked the videos:  The drawings of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci The mind of the Renaissance.    I choose these two because we have read and discussed a lot about both of these two individuals.

2.  The key concepts I found in the Michelangelo video was how Michelangelo used his drawings and how they compared to his finally masterpiece.   Michelangelo was a man how thought outside of the box and so the world and the human body in ways that no one else at that time did.  The key concepts that I learned from watching the film on Leonardo da Vinci was the life of Leonardo da Vinci.  How he saw the world as a little boy and why that played a part in the Renaissance.

3.  The video relates to the reading because the reading also talk a great deal about both Leonardo and Michelangelo.  The video goes into more detail of what the text book says.

4.  I think both videos were interesting. The helped add depth to my understanding because they both went into great detail about each of the individuals I read about in the text book.

Module 9... Exploring Lines

1.  This was a very interesting assignment.  I like the idea of using my hands as the subject matter for my drawing because hands are very detailed and unique.

2.  I choose to use a pencil because I didn't have any charcoal.  If I did have charcoal I would still have used pencil because it seems like it erases easier.

3.  I was very pleased how my drawing with my dominant hand came out.  I was able to sketch it well and also add the detail I saw.  When I switched to my non-dominant hand I was not as easy or comfortable.  I had to concentrate more.  It felt very awkward and I keep wanted to switch over to my dominant hand.  My brain automatically wanted to use my dominant hand.

4.  My hand I was able to draw with my dominant hand came out more detailed.  The hand that was drawn with my non-dominant hand looks shaky and doesn't have as much detail.  I was surprised I was actual able to draw anything that even looked close to a hand.  I also noticed that it came out lighter.  I wasn't able to pressed down on the pencil as hard.

Module 8 Video Review

1.  Explain why you selected each of the three videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I choose the video More human than Human because it was a requirement.
I choose Late Gothic Art and Architecture and A World Inscribed because they seemed to be interesting.

2.  For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

One of the key concepts I learned from More Human than Human was the emphasis on some parts of the Venus of Willendorf sculpture.  Why some parts are enlarged and way others are smaller then normal. Also talk about the human body and why we see it the way we do. The Key concepts of Late Gothic Art and Architecture was to take a closer look at Gothic art.  It talks about Gothic sculptures and other artworks.  The key concepts of a World Inscribed was how writing became to be and also took us through history of where it started.

3.  The videos relate to the reading because each of the topics mentioned in the videos I watch were in the chapters of the book.  The book talks about sculptures, architecture, and printing and writing.

4.  What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I think each of the vidoes were good.  They all added a deeper understanding to the readings of the book.

Module 7...Video Review

Prairie Style (Frank Lloyd Wright)

1.  The key concepts I learned from watching this video was that Frank Lloyd Wright changed the way architectures were being built.  He had a way of thinking out of the box and and not sticking to the typically layout of a living space.  He dislike closed rooms, he found a way to open up the living space and connect the rooms.  The changed the way windows were placed and he had a fascination with horizontal line.  He wanted the structure to feel like apart of the environment.

2. Frank Lloyd Wright was mentioned in the text book.  He is responsible for many great architectures and help to change the way people viewed architecture.  The book and video talk about how he was wanted to make his building seem like a natural part of the environment.  The book mentions him being responsible for the prairie style houses.  The book and video talked about how Wright did away with the typical layout of a house and changed it in a way that made more sense to the occupants  He thought about the way he placed the windows so that the occupants were able to take advantage of the daylight.  In one of his building he moved the living room to the second floor in order to view the street a a higher angle.

3.  I like watching this Video.  I really enjoy architecture and I have heard of Frank Lloyd Wright before. It was nice to  learn more about him.  He was responsible for many building and ideas that are still present today.

4.  I chose this film because I have heard the name Frank Lloyd Wright before and I thought it was important to know about him.  He is apart of our history and to be educated on this is important in many different areas of life.

Architecture: The science of design

1.   The key concepts of this video was to show how high rises are built so the won't topple over. In order to build a building that is structurally sound architects need to know how to design it properly.  There are many different elements that can cause a building to collapse.  Architects need to know how to plant the firmly on the ground so they can withstand wind, earthquakes, storms ect.  The main idea of this video was to show how science plays a role in figuring out how to make these high rises safe.

2.  This video related to the text because in the beginning of chapter 13 it is very important to have a strong foundation.  If your foundation is weak then within a matter of time your structure will fall.  This video was all about that.  In order to make a successful high rise the foundation must be sturdy.  Architects have to start deep in the ground, placing beams to anchor the building.

3.  I enjoyed watching this video.  I never really know much about the structure of buildings so this help to deepen my understanding.  This video showed me how science plays a huge role in designing a building.  It is very important to understand the way thing work and why the work the way they do.

4.  I didn't choose this film for any particular reason.  I just picked another one.  I am glad I did because I think it ties into the chapter very well.  The main topic of this chapter was architecture, if you don't understand the science of architecture you wont get very far in your building plans.

Installation Art

Reflect
What is installation art?
When an artist conceives a space and everything in it as a single work of art.  An artist modifies a space on some way and then asks us to enter, explore and experience it.

What materials are used in installation art?
Artist can use any material that they see fit for what they are trying to express.  They can use everyday items or us more interesting things like planes or and outrageous number of cans.

Why make installation art?
Just like any other form of art, artist make installation art because it is applying and interesting to view.  Installation art however is unique in it ability to make the viewers think outside the box.

Which artist/installation I found most interesting.
Fireflies on the Water was defiantly my favorite installation from the book.  It was an installation that was design for the viewers to enter their imagination.  I like this one because it is not something we see everyday.  It is a artwork were we could get lost in our own imaginations.

Plan
Is there a piece I feel i connected with.
I think they all were excellent idea on different ways installation art can be shown.  Each one offered different ways to express yourself through installation.

Which theme do I want to explore in my installation.
I want to use the environmental theme.  I think that there are many fun ways to make each theme look really cool but the environment one seems to be the best choose for me.  I am going to use the environment of my apartment, my bedroom in particular.  I wanted to do this one because my bedroom is where I send a lot of my time.  So this place is very important to me.

Which materials will I use.
I gathered a bunch of different items from my apartment and lace them around my dresser.  I wanted to transform the space into something that the viewers seemed to be a bit awkward yet still had some sense of  beauty.  I tried to do this by getting items that matched color wise and to place them in a way that had balance.  I tried to make it look awkward by placing the items at a weird angle and adding the bright red bike with a teddy bear in it.

Where will it be located?
I kind of already answered this question.  I will be located in my bedroom because because it is a place that I send a lot of my time in.

Artist:   Brittany Douglas
Title of work:    Bedroom Dreamland
Media:    Dresser, lamp, chair, bike, teddy bear, and mirror
Date:     10/6/2012
Size:    Not very big
Source of picture:    On this blog

Describe
This is my installation piece and it is located in my bedroom.  I want to transform my bedroom from a ordinary bedroom into a piece that you would see in a dream.  It is so close to realty yet there are things about it that don't quiet make sense.  I tried to show this by placing things in a awkward way and added objects that just shouldn't be there like the teddy bear riding a bike. I also tried to capture the picture at weird angles to make it look like something out of a dream and not reality. To me this seems much like a dream because I know the way my bedroom is supposed to look and I know that these are my items. Why are the placed there that way is the question.
Analyze
I used many element and principles to achieve my installation.  I used color, I wanted to used colors that complimented each other so the picture seemed whole.  I used shape, I wanted to incorporate a lot of different shapes to make the picture seem more dream-like.

My thought on planning
Well quiet frankly I am not really enjoying making these projects.  The class has a lot of work that is extremely  time consuming and it takes away from being able to enjoy doing the projects.  I just do the project to get them over with and start the next assignment.  I am never really able to reflect and adsorb the work that I have done.  With that being said I would have really enjoyed doing this project because it made me open up my creative side and allowed me to think outside the box.

Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Through the Eyes of a Sculpture was a video that took you through the journeys that many sculptors take when making sculptures. The key concepts of this video were to help viewers get a better appreciation for sculptors.  It also showed the viewers the step by step process it takes   in order to achieve the finally product.  In the video Glass and Ceramic the key concepts was to show the views how glass and ceramic is made.  The video breaks down the process from the very start, starting with the sand and stone which they are made from.  I also think a key concept of this video was explaining how important each step of the process was.  If you missed a step or don't follow the steps in the correct order you will not come out with the desired material.  Another concept was showing the viewers how glass and ceramic are all around us and how we use them each day in are daily lives. The key concepts of  Installation Art was a define what installation art really is.  The video had great examples to help explain it.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

Through the Eyes of a Sculpture related to the readings because it basically reinforced what the text was saying.  The text told us how a sculptor could make a sculpture by casting a smaller version of it.  The video took us step by step on how he did it.  Starting from when the artist was sculpting the clay with the model in front of him to the plaster being ship all the way to Italy.  The video Glass and Ceramic, relates to the text because they both talk about the materials needed to make glass and ceramic.  The book says there are several different shapes glass can become and the video shows us how reheating the glass can make it more flexible and easier to shape.  The video Installation Art related to the text because it basically showed examples of what the book defines installation art to be.  The video gave us get picture of of some really  cool installation arts.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

I thought the film was helpful.  The helped  to add depth to my understanding of the topics by showing examples of each.  It helps to have a visual to compare the reading to.

Reviewing peer responses

The Blogs that I look at were from Amanda and Vince.  Each one had really good blogs and they were both very different.  Both Amanda and Vince used their creativity in their projects.  Amanda used alot of pictures for a festival she attended.  This was really cool because this allowed here to have the appropriate artistic approach she needed.  Vince went about it a entirely different way. He was able to find all the elements and principles within his own living space.  I thought this was very clever because it should how elements and principles are all around us if you look hard enough.  I agree with both Amanda and Vince. I noticed that in just about very picture there is another element or principle to be found.  Amanda had one painting from the art gallery that was the same as mine.  It was Gustave Courbet, Le Source de la Loue.  Our reasons were similar we both thought the artist painted this picture in a very mysterious way.  Vince and I had one pieces the same.  Amanda chose a painting called  Nude, I seen this at the art gallery and I was going to pick it for the one I wanted to know more about.  I would like to know more about this piece because of the way it kind of blurry.  I cant really tell whats going on in this picture.  I was impressed with all of Vince's pieces because they were so different then mine.
I think it is valuable to read what my peers have read because it gives me a different perspective on the topics I am learning. Throughout the semester I have look at other peoples blogs to see what they were doing and how their work differed from mine.  Molly read my blogs and we both chose a piece from the art gallery that was the same.  I find her comment to be helpful because it showed me how we are thinking like and finding the same thing interesting.
